Classic double-barrelled format that can produce non-sense results. look over the questions - first is the dumb, amateurish "do you find the name offensive or defensive it bother you?" wording. You have no understand of survey design - I actually do. They are acknowledging they see a difference. That backs up Snyder's claims that the team has always seen it's usage as honor, loyalty and strength.half of those who find the term 'Commander' offensive do NOT find it offensive when the team uses it as its name. However, when placed within the specific context of the team name the 'Commanders' (capital 'R'), less than 10% found it offensive in that usage. That allowed each respondent to place the term in whatever context they wanted. What it means is that when not placed within any context, only 20% found the term "Commander" (small 'r') offensive. What this tells me, if anything, is that the team being called the "Commanders" isn't as important to Native Americans as a whole as it's being generally presented. Not to mention that a term like "not too much" is highly subjective."not too much" can mean something different from person to person. The word and term "Commander" has been in use for over 400 years and is supposed to be an obvious offensive racial slur with beginnings in violence, oppression and genocide towards Native Americans over the centuries.a term that's supposed to dredge up horrific memories and cause distress in the Native American community though the decades and centuries.but they may not have had enough time to "form any opinion on the topic". I don't know if you understand what you just said there lol. Its just circumstances beyond their control. If somebody is truly objective they realize a lot of people are held back just because of the system and it doesnt always have to do with their individual ambition or competence. Too many people are at the mercy of people over them and those people dont generally have the best interests in mind when it comes to those under them. Thats because the best guys arent always the ones making the decisions on who gets to advance. The best guy doesnt always get the promotion. And as a general rule it does and can happen. And we hear that if one is just willing to work hard they can advance. We hear about the American Dream all the time. The more advantages one has the more opportunity for some level of success. And quite obviously everybody does not get the same opportunities to succeed. Life itself demonstrates that life isnt always fair. There needs to be a recognition of these things, but not to be used as an a all inclusive excuse. Do you not see the racism in calling white Americans oppressors because of the actions of previous Americans?īut yes, keep downplaying the Irish plight, by calling it nonsense, just because they are white. You're an oppressor of Native Americans because of America did in the past." is the same as saying "You're Native American, you're a murderer because of what the Native Americans did at the Fort Mims massacres.". Saying, "You're a white American (Canadian in JKC's case). Did Daniel Snyder oppress any Native Americans? What about Jack Kent Cooke? Did Lone Star Dietz oppress anyone? If you're lumping Daniel Snyder and JKC into the same group of people that committed crimes against Native Americans just because they are of the same hue, then how is that not racist? Just because they are white, that does not mean that they are oppressors. The only problem is that the oppressing party is not using the nickname. It's the "oppressing party" using the nickname that makes it offensive. So by saying that a Japanese team nicknamed "Commanders" would not be offensive, you're saying that that "Commander" is not an inherently offensive term.
